The same tools for removing spyware will typically protect you as well. Some do and some don't.
The following are tools that have real-time protection against spyware (prevents spyware from being installed in the first place):
- Webroot SpySweeper
- Symantec Norton Antivirus 2006 (previous versions DO NOT have spyware protection)
- Microsoft Antispyware (Windows XP and 2000 only)
- Sunbelt
CounterSpy (very similar to Microsoft Antispyware)
- PC Tools Spyware Doctor (PAID VERSION ONLY)
- Spyware Blaster (recommended only for Windows 95)
These DO NOT protect, but they do scan and remove spyware already installed on your computer:

- Spybot - Search & Destroy
- Ad-Aware Personal & Ad-Aware SE
- HijackThis
