Are you as fed up with spyware as I am? Luckily there are tools that aid in removing these little malicious things. Find your operating system on this page for more information.

I have...

Windows 95
Windows 98 or ME
Windows 2000 or XP
Mac OS or OS X

Windows 2000 or XP

Check out CNet's info page on removing spyware for the everyday surfer. Start there and get the tools they mention. In addition there is also another good spyware removal tool straight from Microsoft called Microsoft Antispyware. This one is only for Windows XP and 2000 and does not work with previous versions of Windows. Get this one in addition to the 4 on the CNet page.

Some important additional comments: Make sure you update each of those tools through the Internet before scanning your computer. If you cannot even access the Internet on the infected computer, have a friend download those 4 programs for you and burn them onto a CD (or otherwise access a clean computer to do so). Make sure you run all four programs in some sequence. Then, run them all again. If the 2nd time around the programs are still detecting spyware, take your computer to someone that knows what they are doing. Additionally, if you know how to get into safe mode, do your scans from there. This is an extra level of force, and as such if you do not know how to do this, then it is not a big deal.

Mac OS and OS X

Since the Mac OS is not as popular as Windows, chances are much smaller that you have spyware. There is at least one tool I know of that detects/removes/protects for the Mac called "MacScan". Unfortunately, that's the only one I know of. If you have a good one that you use, please let me know!

Windows 95

Unfortunately, spyware removal for Windows 95 isn't quite as easy as newer operating systems, but it is doable. If you are still running Windows 95, congratulations, your computer has most likely past the average expectancy of 5 -7 years, but you also may want to consider getting a new one.

Microsoft no longer supports Windows 95 and I will refrain from giving advice. If you are ambitious however, here is a good resource page on Windows 95 with links to spyware tools for Windows 95 (mainly spywareblaster, adaware, and spybot) here: http://oldfiles.org.uk/lightspeed/lightspeed95.html
